Learning Through Choice
Each morning, our children begin a 3-hour uninterrupted Montessori work cycle, combined with art, music and dance and lots of outdoor free play and fun available in the afternoon.
During this time, they choose activities that match their interests and stage of development while being guided by our experienced kaiako. Children move freely throughout the classroom, returning to activities, mastering new skills and learning to take responsibility for their own environment.
This uninterrupted time allows children to develop concentration, independence and a deep enjoyment of learning.
Practical Skills for Everyday Life
Our Whare Kea children continue building practical life skills every day.
You'll often see children preparing food, baking, sewing, arranging flowers, polishing, washing tables, sweeping, gardening and caring for their classroom. These activities strengthen fine motor skills, coordination, independence and confidence while teaching children to care for themselves, others and their environment.

Literacy & Numeracy
As children become ready, they naturally progress into reading, writing and mathematics using Montessori materials.
Throughout the day, our children build words, read books, write stories, count, explore mathematical concepts and solve problems using hands-on materials that make learning engaging and meaningful. Every child progresses at their own pace, developing strong foundations before moving to more advanced concepts.

Learning Beyond the Classroom
Our learning extends far beyond the classroom walls.
Children spend time in our half-acre outdoor environment exploring nature, caring for gardens, observing insects, harvesting fruit and vegetables, creating with natural materials and enjoying plenty of active outdoor play.
Outdoor learning is simply another part of the Montessori classroom.

Art, Music & Creativity
Creativity is part of everyday life in Whare Kea.
Children enjoy painting, drawing, sculpting, music, dance, dramatic play and creative projects that encourage imagination and self-expression. These experiences help children build confidence while discovering their own unique interests and talents.

Building Friendships & Confidence
Whare Kea is a close, respectful community where children learn alongside one another.
Older children naturally become leaders and role models, while younger children learn through observation and collaboration. Mixed-age learning encourages kindness, patience, empathy and a genuine sense of belonging.
