Practical Education

Practical Learning for Life

At Riverhead Montessori, children learn by doing. Every day they pour, count, build, create, explore and discover through carefully prepared Montessori activities that match their stage of development.

From tying shoelaces and baking to reading, geography and science, every experience is hands-on, purposeful and designed to build confidence, independence and a genuine love of learning.

Practical Life Skills

Our children spend each day developing real-life skills they'll use for years to come.

You'll often see children pouring water, preparing food, washing tables, polishing, sweeping, sewing, arranging flowers, baking, gardening and caring for their classroom. These activities build concentration, coordination and independence while giving children the confidence to do things for themselves.

Language, Literacy & Numeracy

Language and mathematics are introduced through hands-on Montessori materials that children enjoy exploring at their own pace.

Throughout the day, our children practise recognising letters, building words, reading books, writing stories, counting, sequencing numbers and solving mathematical problems using concrete materials before moving onto abstract concepts. Learning becomes something children experience, not simply memorise.

Sensorial Learning

Our children explore the world through all of their senses.

Using specially designed Montessori materials, they compare colours, sounds, textures, shapes, sizes, weights and dimensions. These activities strengthen observation skills, attention to detail and logical thinking while preparing children for later learning in mathematics, language and science.

Science

Curiosity is encouraged every day.

Our children observe insects, plant seeds, care for the garden, explore magnets, experiment with water, learn about the weather and discover how living things grow and change. Science is introduced through exploration and real experiences that inspire children to ask questions and investigate the world around them.

Geography & Culture

Children naturally become curious about the world beyond their own community.

Through maps, globes, flags, music, food, stories and cultural celebrations, our children discover different countries, people and traditions. They learn about continents, oceans, animals and environments while developing an appreciation for the diversity of our world.

Art

Creativity is part of everyday life at Riverhead Montessori.

Children paint, draw, cut, glue, sculpt, weave and work with a wide variety of natural and artistic materials. Rather than following a template, children are encouraged to express their own ideas and create artwork that reflects their imagination and individuality.

Music & Movement

Music is woven throughout our day.

Our children sing, dance, play instruments, move to rhythm and participate in group music experiences that build confidence and coordination. Whether it's action songs, cultural music or simply moving together, music brings joy, creativity and connection to everyday learning.
